Abstract

E-learning evolution strives to keep up with the pace of digital and technological developments; while the variables involved in the formula for successful implementation of online learning initiatives are many, among which can be listed the most relevant interactors in the e-learning ecosystem, namely, e-learning standards organizations, e-learning platform providers, makers of authoring tools, education institutions, and the end users (i.e. learners and educators). This research on e-learning provides overall definitions and a brief historical review of standards, analyzes current trends, assesses strengths and weaknesses, and presents recommendations to enhance the user experience in this field.
